Weekly open-air concerts in the disused quarry
The Old Quarry on Hobelsstraße is an unusual concert venue. Closed decades ago, the hollow, framed by walls and vegetation, has developed into a natural acoustic backdrop. Anyone sitting here on one of the wooden benches listening to a big band understands why musicians love the place: the sound carries, the stone dampens, the greenery filters.
The concept is clear: Every Thursday evening from 7 to 9 PM, from mid-June to early August, a different ensemble from the region performs. The Heimat- und Verkehrsverein St. Ingbert curates the program and handles logistics. Performers are usually music clubs, big bands, and choirs from the Saarpfalz district – amateur music at a high level, often with decades of club tradition behind them.
The 2026 season features nine concerts from Thursday, June 11th to Thursday, August 6th. Kicking things off is the Hermanns BIG BAND on June 11th, followed by the Municipal Orchestra with horn players on June 18th, and the KreisCHORverband on June 25th. In July, "Musik verbindet", the music clubs Hochscheid-Reichenbrunn and Rohrbach, the Werzbachkrainer (folk music), and SaxHochZwo (saxophone ensemble) will be on stage. The season finale on August 6th will be presented by the Musikverein Rentrisch.
The summer concerts embody a deep-rooted understanding of music as a community asset in the Saarland. Unlike commercial festivals, they thrive on volunteer commitment and low entry barriers. Admission is free; a collection at the end of the evening benefits the performing clubs. It's a format rarely found in today's festival landscape – and precisely why it has a loyal regular audience.
St. Ingbert boasts a remarkably vibrant music scene: from the cabaret festival St. Ingberter Pfanne to the wind orchestra and the summer concerts. The town in the Saarpfalz district consistently invests in its cultural infrastructure and sees itself as a cultural competitor to Saarbrücken and Homburg. The summer concerts are a subtle but important part of this positioning.
