Sudenburg meets Saale-Unstrut
The Sudenburger Weinfest is one of the most beautiful neighbourhood festivals in the state capital Magdeburg. The organizer is IG Sudenburg or Unser Sudenburg e.V.—a citizens' initiative that has been committed to the cultural and social identity of the neighbourhood for years. The wine festival is one of their regular formats and has become a firm fixture for Magdeburg's wine and neighbourhood fans in just eight editions.
Sudenburg is a dense, Wilhelminian-era neighbourhood in the south of Magdeburg, characterized by the old Halberstädter Straße as its main axis. In the mid-2010s, the neighbourhood developed into one of Magdeburg's liveliest quarters—with cafés, small shops, galleries, and a committed community.
Format: one afternoon, one courtyard, many vintners
The wine festival takes place in the courtyard of the historic fire station at Halberstädter Str. 140—a characteristic brick courtyard that becomes the stage for Sudenburg's wine culture throughout the day. The focus is on wines from the nearby Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, Germany's northernmost classic wine region. Several vintners from Naumburg, Freyburg, Bad Kösen, and the surrounding area present their wines; local restaurateurs provide culinary accompaniment.
Sudenburger Wine Queen
The highlight of the festival is the inauguration of the Sudenburger Wine Queen—a lovingly staged ritual that links neighbourhood identity with the Saale-Unstrut tradition. The Wine Queen then accompanies Sudenburg's neighbourhood festivals for a year and represents Sudenburg at regional wine events.
Around the festival
For those who want to extend the day: Halberstädter Straße offers numerous bars and restaurants where the evening can continue after sunset. The Sudenburger Weinfest is not the only neighbourhood festival organized by the association—the Sudenburger Marktfest and the Sudenburger Adventsmarkt are also regular events.
