Anniversary 30 Years of District Festival in the Courtyard of the Fire Station
Sudenburg is one of the most traditional districts of Magdeburg, located southwest of the city center. Characterized by Wilhelminian-era architecture, Halberstädter Straße as a long commercial axis, and an active neighborhood, Sudenburg is one of the districts that consciously cultivates its own identity. The driving force behind this district work for years has been the association UNSER SUDENBURG e.V. (formerly IG Sudenburg), chaired by Michael Hoffmann.
The Sudenburger Straßenfest was first held in 1996 – in 2026, it celebrates its 30th edition. The festival has evolved from a small neighborhood initiative into a firm fixture in Magdeburg's spring calendar. In 2026, the anniversary deliberately falls on May 9th, coinciding with the Day of Urban Development Funding – a nationwide initiative that highlights neighborhood work, renovation successes, and citizen participation.
The venue for the festival is the courtyard of the historic Feuerwache Sudenburg (Sudenburg Fire Station) at Halberstädter Straße 140 – a former fire protection site now used as a cultural center. The brick facade, the spacious courtyard, and the workshop buildings give the festival an unusual, urban atmosphere, combining the classic district festival character with an almost industrial-cultural touch.
Magdeburg is the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt – an independent city, a university location, the seat of Otto von Guericke research, and the largest economic and cultural anchor of the state. District festivals like the Sudenburger Straßenfest are important for the self-understanding of a large city that is more than just its city center.
The 30th Sudenburger Straßenfest 2026 features a dense, very typical district program: no large stage spectacle, but a mix of encounters, history, children, and music. The exhibition "From Chicory, Tobacco, and Sugar" offers a historical look at Sudenburg's industrial roots. The communal picnic at the long table invites conversation. The building tours led by Sudenburg historian Nadja Gröschner provide insights into the Wilhelminian-era architecture. The festival is musically accompanied by accordionist Martin Müller at noon and singer-songwriter Bodo Lüddemann in the afternoon.
