Colorful family festival by the initiative »Dorfen hat viele Gesichter«
The Upper Bavarian town of Dorfen in the Erding district is known for its picturesque old town and pilgrimage monastery — and in recent years, increasingly for its active civil society. One of the most visible initiatives is »Dorfen hat viele Gesichter« (Dorfen Has Many Faces), an alliance of clubs, church organizations, the city administration, and social institutions that advocates for diversity, integration, and neighborly coexistence.
Once a year, the initiative transforms the Johannisplatz into a colorful stage. From 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the central square is closed to traffic, tables and benches replace cars, and the rows of houses become an improvised concert backdrop. The focus is on music, encounters, and accessible hands-on activities.
Three bands perform on stage, representing different musical traditions:
In addition, there are dance performances and shows that broaden the spectrum.
From 2:00 PM onwards, a family and participation program runs: giant soap bubbles, football darts, craft stations, and other activities supervised by the city library, the volunteer fire department, the integration center, and the city's youth services. Around 3:00 PM, the initiative invites you to an open talk with clubs and businesses — a format that specifically fosters dialogue between citizens, clubs, and the economy.
The 2026 street festival will take place on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM on the central Johannisplatz in Dorfen. The square will be closed to traffic from early morning that day, and the initiative Dorfen hat viele Gesichter has put together the program in collaboration with clubs, the city administration, and social institutions.
From 1:00 PM, stands from neighborhood aid organizations and local clubs will provide the audience with food and drinks at low prices. The stage will feature performances by the three bands, along with dance shows. The hands-on program for families begins at 2:00 PM. Around 3:00 PM, there will be an opportunity for direct conversation with representatives of local clubs and businesses.
Free admission. Food and drinks are offered on-site at low prices by neighborhood aid organizations and clubs.
Dorfen is located on the Munich–Mühldorf railway line; the train station is a few minutes' walk from Johannisplatz. By car, take the B 15 or the A 94 (exit Dorfen-Süd).
Johannisplatz itself is closed to traffic during the festival from 7:00 AM to approx. 8:00 PM. Parking is available in the downtown parking lots, at the cemetery parking lot, and at the fairground (Volksfestplatz).
Free admission. Food and drinks are offered at low prices by neighborhood aid organizations and local clubs.
Come in the early afternoon when the hands-on program begins — ideal for families.
