Three days of beach, music, sports, and showmen by the lake in the Elbe-Elster district
When the Strandfest am Kiebitzsee begins, the recreation area north of Falkenberg/Elster fills with people from the Elbe-Elster district and far beyond. The Kiebitzsee, a flooded former open-cast mine, has been the region's most important local recreation destination for decades – with a fine sandy beach, clear water, and a park-like lakeside promenade. It is precisely here, at the end of July or beginning of August each year, that this three-day Volksfest (folk festival) takes place.
The Strandfest is traditionally divided into three spatially separate areas that all function together: the large amusement park with rides, carousels, and stalls; the lakeside promenade with regional stands, gastronomy, and handicrafts; and the sports area with the beach volleyball cup, run, and games. Those who wish can switch between the beach, stage, and Ferris wheel several times a day.
The heart of the festival is the main stage with its large event tent. Cover bands and party bands, as well as regional artists, perform here – from Schlager to Rock 'n' Roll and hits from the 80s and 90s. On Saturday evening, a spectacular fireworks display over the lake regularly crowns the festival evening. An entrance fee is collected for the main stage area from the afternoon onwards; the other areas remain freely accessible.
Two classics are maintained in terms of sports: the Kiebitzlauf, an open fun run around the lake, and the beach volleyball cup on the sand courts. Both competitions have cultivated a loyal following over the years and are now an integral part of the Strandfest calendar in southern Brandenburg.
Falkenberg/Elster is located in southern Brandenburg in the Elbe-Elster district, nestled in the gentle hilly landscape between the Schwarze Elster river and the Niederlausitz lowlands. The town was once an important railway junction – a fact still remembered today by the Railway Museum. Besides the Railway Festival, the Strandfest am Kiebitzsee is the town's most important summer event.
From July 31 to August 2, 2026, the Kiebitzsee recreation area will transform into a festival mile between the sandy beach, lakeside promenade, and main stage. For three days, the Strandfest will offer live music, rides, sports competitions, regional specialties, and the traditional fireworks display over the lake.
The amusement park, promenade, and sports area are freely accessible. From the afternoon onwards, an entrance fee will be charged in the main stage area. Sunday is traditionally dedicated to relaxed program items and family activities.
In the past, the main stage featured regional bands playing Schlager, party rock, and 90s hits, among others. Detailed daily schedules and artists will be published shortly before the festival at strandfest-kiebitzsee.de.
