About Stoppelmarkt Vechta

With around 800,000 visitors, the Stoppelmarkt Vechta is the largest Volksfest (popular festival) in Northwest Germany and will celebrate its 728th edition in 2026. From August 13th to 18th, the Westerheide will transform into a spectacular festival mile spanning 160,000 square meters, featuring carousels, beer tents, animal and trade shows. Thursday, August 13th at 4:30 PM: parade through the city center, 6:30 PM: official opening. Tuesday, August 18th: Family Day with a grand fireworks display to conclude. Tradition since the late 13th century: The Stoppelmarkt combines a Volksfest (popular festival), horse market, trade exhibition, and regional identity.

728 Years of Stoppelmarkt

The Stoppelmarkt Vechta is one of the oldest and largest Volksfeste (popular festivals) in Germany. Its history dates back to around 1298, when farmers from the Oldenburger Münsterland gathered on the mown stubble fields after the grain harvest to trade livestock, horses, and agricultural products. Over the centuries, this rural tradition has evolved into the largest Volksfest (popular festival) in Northwest Germany. The 728th edition will be celebrated in 2026.

800,000 Visitors Over Six Days

With approximately 800,000 visitors over six festival days, the Stoppelmarkt ranks among Germany's major Volksfeste (popular festivals) — on par with the Cranger Kirmes in Herne, the Schützenfest Hannover, or the Send in Münster. The Westerheide offers ample space on 160,000 square meters for the immense festival mile with carousels, roller coasters, beer tents, animal shows, trade shows, and a horse market.

Parade and Opening

The event kicks off on Thursday, August 13th, 2026, with the parade at 4:30 PM through Vechta's city center. Over a hundred floats, marching bands, showman groups, and clubs will march from the city center to the Westerheide. This will be followed by the official opening at 6:30 PM with a beer tapping ceremony by the mayor or a prominent guest of honor. The first carousels will start operating, and the beer tents will fill up.

Horse Market and Animal Show

A historical highlight is the horse market, which connects the Stoppelmarkt to its rural roots. Breeders from the Oldenburger Land and beyond present their horses — from sturdy draft horses to sport horses and ponies. Deals are made directly at the market square, a piece of tradition that remains vibrant today. The animal show complements the program with cattle, pigs, sheep, and poultry.

Trade Show

The trade show brings together regional businesses, agricultural machinery dealers, craftspeople, and service providers. Everything from modern combine harvesters to regional specialties is represented — an industry fair with a Volksfest (popular festival) atmosphere. The trade show is an important date for farmers and businesses in the Oldenburger Münsterland.

Carousels, Beer Tents, Food Stalls

The entertainment on offer is immense: Ferris wheel, roller coasters, free-fall tower, haunted houses, bumper cars, swing carousels — everything the showman industry has to offer. Several large beer tents with live music, Schlager hits, and party songs attract thousands of guests. Food stalls offer everything from crêpes to pork knuckles, from bratwurst to regional specialties.

Family Day and Fireworks Display

Tuesday, August 18th, 2026, is Family Day with reduced prices on carousels. The grand finale is the spectacular fireworks display on Tuesday evening — a dazzling light show over the Westerheide that attracts thousands of spectators and brings the Stoppelmarkt to an unforgettable close.

Identity of the Oldenburger Münsterland

The Stoppelmarkt is much more than a Volksfest (popular festival) — it is an identity-forming event for the region. Families plan their summer holidays around the festival week, visitors from all over Northern Germany and the Netherlands travel here, and Vechta natives living elsewhere return home. The Stoppelmarkt is a concentrated form of 'Heimat' (homeland).
