Annual city festival for senior citizens in Zerbst
While city festivals, Christmas markets, and summer festivals are part of the annual event repertoire in practically every German city, city festivals explicitly aimed at seniors are rather rare. Zerbst/Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district has decided to dedicate a whole day in September to its older citizens: The Zerbster Stadtseniorenfest on the Oberer Markt – an initiative that underscores the high importance of senior activities in the city.
The concept of the Stadtseniorenfest is twofold: On the one hand, it is an information fair where pharmacies, medical supply stores, Zerbst Hospital, adult education center, Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), Volkssolidarität, German Red Cross, and the Anhalt Hospice Zerbst present their services, and the consumer advice center of Saxony-Anhalt provides advice on energy issues. On the other hand, it is a classic meeting festival with a stage program, live music, coffee, cake, and joint activities where senior citizens from Zerbst and the surrounding districts come together.
Zerbst/Anhalt is one of the most traditional cities in southern Saxony-Anhalt – birthplace of the later Russian Empress Catherine the Great, home of the Baroque composer Johann Friedrich Fasch, and venue of the International Fasch Festival. With the Stadtseniorenfest, the city also cultivates the social dimension of its self-image: A city that takes its older residents seriously and dedicates its own festival day to them.
On the stage at the Oberer Markt, performances by local dance and singing groups alternate with live music. Schlager bands or choirs from the region often perform; the repertoire is deliberately chosen to be audience-friendly. Admission is free, as are the services offered by the information stands.
The 2026 program follows the proven format: In the morning, the information stands open on the Oberer Markt, pharmacies and Zerbst Hospital provide information on health and care topics, the consumer advice center advises on energy issues, the Anhalt Hospice Zerbst and various welfare associations are represented with stands. Accompanying stage program with dance and singing groups as well as live music. Detailed program and stage acts will be published shortly before the date.
Detailed program: To be published on stadt-zerbst.de.
Zerbst is located in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, about 25 kilometers northeast of Dessau-Roßlau and 35 kilometers southeast of Magdeburg. By car via the A9 (exit Dessau-Süd) or B187. By train: Zerbst station (RB connections from Magdeburg and Dessau), from there it is a short walk to the Oberer Markt.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Consulting services and information stands are free of charge. Food and drinks are subject to a charge.
If you have older family members in Zerbst, you can suggest they visit the Stadtseniorenfest – the program is designed for social interaction, and many exhibitors also provide information on care, prevention, and health in old age.
