Two days of UNESCO shooting tradition with bird shoot and parade in the city center
The Stadtschützenfest Mönchengladbach is the largest and oldest marksmen's festival in the Vitusstadt — and part of a tradition recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015. The origins of the brotherhoods date back well before 1836; the festival in its current form, uniting all brotherhoods of the city, has existed since 1836. On the first weekend of September — September 5th and 6th, 2026 — around 30,000 visitors will flock to the city center to experience 2,500 marching marksmen, the bird shoot, and the grand parade.
The festival Saturday begins with an ecumenical tone and culminates in the central sporting decision of the weekend:
The second day combines ecclesiastical and secular highlights:
The Brotherhood Council of the Mönchengladbach St. Sebastianus Brotherhoods coordinates the festival. The 38 brotherhoods of the district combine Catholic tradition with modern club work — around one-third of the members are under 35 years old, a remarkably high proportion compared to other traditional clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia. The annual City King wears a silver royal insignia and represents the marksmen of Mönchengladbach at festivals and receptions for one year.
In 2015, the German UNESCO Commission added the marksmen tradition to the national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognizes the contribution of the brotherhoods in NRW, the Lower Rhine, and the Rhineland: social cohesion, preservation of traditions, and bridges between generations and religious as well as social classes. Mönchengladbach is one of the strongholds of this tradition — alongside Düsseldorf, Neuss, and Cologne.
With almost 270,000 inhabitants, Mönchengladbach is the fourth-largest city on the Lower Rhine and home to the renowned football club Borussia. The Stadtschützenfest takes place in the historic center of the Vitusstadt around Münster, Alter Markt, Rathausvorplatz, and Kaiser-Friedrich-Halle — short distances between venues, perfect conditions for a weekend full of tradition.
The Stadtschützenfest Mönchengladbach 2026 showcases the UNESCO-recognized marksmen tradition over two days in the historic city center. Bird shoot on Saturday, Coronation Mass and the magnificent parade on Sunday.
