Traditional Summer Festival of the Town Band Zell am Harmersbach on the forecourt of the Obere Fabrik
The Summer Festival of the Town Band Zell am Harmersbach is one of those festivals that define identity in the Black Forest: not big, not spectacular, but deeply rooted in the local community. Organized by the Town Band Zell am Harmersbach, one of the oldest music associations in the Ortenau district, the festival is a two-day meeting point for the people of Zell and guests from neighboring towns like Nordrach, Oberharmersbach, Biberach, and surrounding Black Forest communities.
The festival grounds are the forecourt of the Obere Fabrik in Zell am Harmersbach — a central area in the town, which is equipped with a beer tent, stage, seating, and food stalls during the festival. The Town Band, with its team of helpers, sets up a typical Swabian-Baden outdoor tavern area here: wooden tables and benches, pennant chains, fairy lights, beer garden flair. In good weather, the atmosphere is unique — when the sun sinks over the Black Forest hills and the musicians strike up their first pieces, it has its own special magic.
The focus is on brass music. The Stadtkapelle Zell itself performs with its current program — marches, polkas, waltzes, Bohemian-Moravian pieces, interspersed with modern arrangements. The program is enhanced by friendly music associations from the Harmersbachtal valley and the wider Ortenau region, who perform as guest bands. On Sunday morning, there is traditionally a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) program; the main concerts are performed on Sunday and Monday evenings. The youth band of the Stadtkapelle Zell also performs regularly, giving a stage to the next generation of musicians.
The Town Band and its helpers cook, grill, and bake themselves. The gastronomic offering is classically Swabian-Baden: grilled bratwurst, spaetzle with gravy, Schäufele (pork shoulder) with potato salad, and on Sundays, traditionally roast beef or pork with Knöpfle (small dumplings). At the coffee tables, there are homemade cakes — Black Forest gateau, apple cake, cheesecake. Drinks: draft beer (mostly from regional breweries), wines from the edge of the Black Forest, non-alcoholic options.
Zell am Harmersbach (approx. 8,100 inhabitants, Ortenau district 08317) is a small former imperial city in the central Black Forest. The town is primarily known for Zeller Keramik with its famous rooster-and-hen design, a traditional tableware pattern found in many grandmother's cupboards across southern Germany. The Stork Tower landmark with its nesting white storks is also a tourist attraction. Visitors to the summer festival should plan a stroll through the small, well-preserved old town.
On Sunday, July 5, and Monday, July 6, 2026, the Town Band Zell am Harmersbach invites you to its traditional summer festival on the forecourt of the Obere Fabrik. Two days of brass music, Swabian-Baden tavern fare, and community life under the open sky.
On stage, the Stadtkapelle Zell and friendly music associations from the Harmersbachtal valley and the wider Ortenau region will alternate; the youth band also traditionally gets a performance opportunity. On Sunday morning, the "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) begins with a beer tent atmosphere, followed by lunch with roast and spaetzle. In the evening, the main concert of the Stadtkapelle follows. On Monday as well — which is traditionally less crowded, but therefore has a particularly relaxed atmosphere — a guest band will provide entertainment.
Exact schedules and performances by guest bands will be published in the event calendar at zell.ortenaukultur.de and the Schwarzwälder Post.
