St. Georg in Festival Mode
Directly behind the main train station begins one of Hamburg's liveliest neighbourhoods: St. Georg, with its main axis Lange Reihe, is queer, diverse, multicultural, and culturally highly engaged. Once a year at the end of May, the neighbourhood festival takes over Lange Reihe: stage at Carl-von-Ossietzky-Platz, DJ tower in the second festival zone, bars and restaurants open on the street, plus a flea market on Baumeisterstraße.
Civic Association as Organiser
The traditional Bürgerverein zu St. Georg von 1880 is the organiser; the Hamburg agency AHOI Events has been responsible for operational implementation since 2010. The civic association stands for a form of urban self-organisation that is historically rooted in St. Georg – the festival is explicitly intended to make neighbourhood groups, associations, cultural centres, and queer initiatives visible.
Programme Components
On the main stage at Carl-von-Ossietzky-Platz, neighbourhood choirs, up-and-coming Hamburg bands, and DJ sets perform. In addition, there are stands from associations, a family area, the flea market on Baumeisterstraße, and culinary offerings from the restaurants of Lange Reihe (from Eastern European cuisine to Vietnamese, Turkish, Indian). The weekend thrives on the mix – neighbourhood and festival in one.
