Traditional parish fair in honour of Saint Pantaleon in Unkel with processions, carousels and attractions
The parish church of St. Pantaleon in the centre of Unkel is one of the most important sacred buildings in the region. Saint Pantaleon – an early Christian martyr from the 4th century – is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and was particularly venerated in the Middle Ages. The Unkel parish fair dates back to this veneration and, like many parish fair traditions on the Middle Rhine, preserves the custom of church service, procession, and village festival.
The parish community, the local bachelor club, and the town of Unkel work hand in hand for the fair. The festival ceremony, setup, security, catering, stage programme, and liturgical elements are shared among the various sponsors. Volunteer-run structures shape the village atmosphere.
The fair is concentrated in Unkel's historic town centre – Market Square, Burgtor, and adjacent alleys. Carousels, medium-sized rides, food stalls, a festival tent with a stage programme, and a children's area will be set up. The close proximity between the parish church, Market Square, and the Rhine promenade gives the fair a special atmospheric density.
Typical programme items include: Festival ceremony/barrel tapping on Friday evening, live music in the festival tent on Saturday evening, festive church service and procession on Sunday morning, Sunday morning pint with brass music, family afternoon with children's programme. Carousels operate throughout the weekend.
The 2026 edition follows the traditional programme structure. Carousels, food stalls, and a festival tent will be set up in the historic town centre. The parish community of St. Pantaleon is responsible for the liturgical elements, and the bachelor club for the festive accents.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the summer of 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
