Hands-on sports festival for the whole family on May 31, 2026, in the Emscherland Nature and Water Experience Park (Recklinghausen/Castrop-Rauxel)
The Sportfestival Emscherland takes place in the eponymous Nature and Water Experience Park — a renaturation project of around 30 hectares that connects the Emscher and the Rhine-Herne Canal on the border between Recklinghausen-Suderwich and Castrop-Rauxel. The park is the result of the "Emscher Master Plan" and years of ecological remediation of what was once "Europe's dirtiest river". Today, Emscherland is one of the largest contiguous green spaces in the northern Ruhr area — with playgrounds, waterways, adventure trails, and wide paths along the canal.
The second edition of the sports festival, following its premiere in 2025, will take place on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The festival is the central hands-on event of the Recklinghausen "Week of Sports" — an action phase of about two weeks during which the city coordinates numerous smaller sports offerings in its districts. The Sportfestival Emscherland is the showcase event of the week.
The concept is explicitly participatory: visitors are encouraged not just to watch, but to try out sports themselves — often under the guidance of the respective club coaches:
The 2025 premiere on May 25 in Suderwich was an immediate success. Deputy Mayor Marita Bergmaier opened the festival at 11 AM on a stage — the format of the city of Recklinghausen's first "Week of Sports" (May 23–June 9, 2025) proved successful: accessible, free, participatory, set in a natural space rather than a stadium. In 2026, the format will be expanded with more sports clubs and greater involvement from neighboring cities.
Recklinghausen is the district capital of the Recklinghausen district, Germany's most populous rural district, with around 113,000 inhabitants in the city itself. It is the northernmost city center of the Ruhr area and historically belongs to the "Vest Recklinghausen" — a former territory of Cologne. The city hosts the annual Ruhrfestspiele (major international theater festival in May/June) and, with the Sportfestival Emscherland, positions itself additionally as a sustainable sports and nature city — a complementary identity that the festival explicitly promotes.
After its successful premiere in 2025, the Sportfestival Emscherland will enter its second edition on May 31, 2026. 30 hectares of parkland at the junction of the Emscher and the Rhine-Herne Canal will become a hands-on sports stage for six hours — focus: accessible sports to try out with club coaches.
A special feature of the festival: the DLRG local groups from four neighboring cities will present water rescue demonstrations with rescue boats on the Rhine-Herne Canal — a rare live performance that also raises awareness about swimming safety.
Admission to the entire sports festival and all hands-on stations is free. Costs are only incurred at the food trucks.
