Grand Medieval Market with Knight Tournament and Live Music at Cologne's Fühlinger See — May Weekend 2026
Cologne, Germany's fourth-largest city with over 1 million inhabitants, is not only known for Carnival, Cologne Cathedral, and its Rhine metropolis status, but also as a city with a deep-rooted fascination for the Middle Ages: Roman and medieval city history (oldest city in Germany with medieval substance, Gothic cathedral, Romanesque churches), a strong historical reenactment scene, and several large medieval markets throughout the year. The Fühlinger See in northern Cologne, a former open-cast mining pit with extensive recreational areas, is one of the few sufficiently large and atmospherically suitable open-air locations for a festival of this size.
The Fühlinger See originated from a former open-cast lignite mining pit and is now a large local recreation area in northern Cologne (Chorweiler district): several lakes, vast meadows, sports facilities, and a regatta course. The former mining heritage combines with nature experience and event space here — a perfect location for a medieval festival that requires ample space for encampments, stages, market alleys, and the tournament grounds. Travel by KVB line 15 (light rail) to Fühlinger See.
In 2026, the Spectaculum at Fühlinger See will undergo a significant change: new organization (SKH Event instead of the previous Karst-Eventservice) and a new date — the festival has moved from the traditional third weekend of September to the May holiday weekend including Labour Day. The new date offers two advantages: longer daylight hours (May versus September) and a public holiday (May 1st) for a long weekend.
The knight tournament is the main event of every Spectaculum: mounted jousting (lance duels), sword fighting, show combat sequences with choreographed action and narration. A reenactment group designs the tournament — several show slots on all three days.
The musical offering consists of medieval-inspired folk and festival medieval rock:
Two stages with staggered programming ensure continuous music.
Around 50 market stalls will present medieval clothing (tunics, dresses, surcoats), jewelry (chainmail, horn carvings), leather goods, drinking horns, incense, swords and steel replicas, as well as historically inspired food and drinks (mead, beer, suckling pig, cheese dishes).
Historical reenactment groups will set up camps on the grounds — tent encampments, campfires, weapon demonstrations, leatherworking, bow making. Visitors can enter the camp areas, talk to reenactors, and witness crafts live. In addition, there will be juggling, sword dancing, storytelling, and fire-eating performances in the evening.
Admission prices vary by day and age: Fri+Sat €15 Adults, €7 Children · Sun €10 Adults, €5 Children · 3-Day Pass €30 Adults, €15 Children. Parking lots P1 and P2 at Fühlinger See, accessible parking spaces at P1. Travel by KVB light rail line 15 from Cologne Main Station directly to Fühlinger See — public transport is the recommended option to ease the parking situation on a 3-day May weekend.
Those combining the May weekend with the Spectaculum can experience Cologne comprehensively: Cologne Cathedral with its treasury, the Roman-Germanic Museum, the Chocolate Museum, the Belgian Quarter for gastronomy and boutiques, and the Rhine Promenade. May traditionally brings mild weather and is free of Carnival — one of the most pleasant times to visit Cologne. For longer stays: the southern Rhineland (Brühl with Augustusburg Palace, Bonn, Königswinter) as a day trip destination.
First Spectaculum edition in the May format on the May 1st weekend — longer daylight, long weekend thanks to Labour Day. SKH Event takes over the event from the previous organization.
