Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, born on May 19, 1744, at Mirow Castle, married King George III of Great Britain and Ireland in 1761. She was the mother of 15 children, a patron of arts and sciences, a supporter of Mozart and the Bach sons, and a garden enthusiast – and lent her name to places like Charlottesville (USA), Queen Charlotte Sound (New Zealand), and Charlotte Amalie in the US Virgin Islands.

For Charlotte's birthday on May 19, Mirow Castle offers a special tour that leads through her birth castle with a particular focus. Topics range from her childhood and education in Mirow, through marriage and coronation formalities, to the significance of the personal union between Mecklenburg and Britain. The tour utilizes rooms and exhibits in the Castle Museum.

Mirow Castle as a Birthplace

Mirow Castle is one of the best-preserved Baroque castles in Northern Germany. The castle island, with the main castle, the Kavalierhaus (gentlemen's house), the Johanniterkirche (Knights Hospitaller Church), and the burial chapel, forms a unique ensemble of Mecklenburg-Strelitz court culture. The castle has been extensively renovated and is now a museum.
