Marathon on Lake Constance through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland
The Sparkasse 3-Länder-Marathon is a member event of AIMS and IG German Road Races and is considered one of the best-known marathon events on Lake Constance. The organizer is SEG Sport Event GmbH, based in Hohenems (Vorarlberg, Austria); the main sponsor is the regional savings banks (Sparkassen).
The start is on the famous harbor promenade of Lindau island (Bavaria, DE) with a view of the Bavarian Lion and the Lindau lighthouse. The route follows the shore of Lake Constance eastward, crosses the German-Austrian border into Vorarlberg, then the Austrian-Swiss border at St. Margrethen, where Swiss customs officers traditionally wave the field across the border with cowbells. After a Swiss loop, it goes back to Austria and finally to the finish line in the Bregenz Casino Stadium. With only approx. +17 meters of elevation gain, the total course is one of the flattest marathon routes in Central Europe.
In addition to the classic marathon (42.195 km), there are numerous shorter races: Skinfit Half Marathon (21.1 km), ImmoAgent Quarter Marathon (10.9 km), Nordic Walking over 10.9 km or 21 km, Marathon Relay for 4-person teams, and a Kids' Marathon (“Vorarlberg bewegt”). Depending on the edition, 5,000 to 6,000 runners from over 60 nations are expected.
Lindau administratively belongs to the Lindau (Lake Constance) district in the extreme southwest of Bavaria; the city is located directly in the four-country region of Lake Constance. The arrival in Bregenz, the capital of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, is traditionally celebrated with a large reception in a Volksfest (popular festival) atmosphere at the Casino Stadium. With the start number, runners, helpers, and spectators can travel for free by bus and train in the region.
The start of the 2026 marathon is at 09:45 in five waves from six blocks on the harbor promenade of Lindau island. The island is closed to cars on the morning of the marathon; travel by train or ferry.
