World's Longest Castle Complex as an Experience Area

Burghausen Castle stretches for about 1,051 meters along a ridge high above the Salzach river – officially making it the longest castle complex in the world. With its five courtyards, the main castle, and the castle gate, it forms an impressive ensemble managed by the Bavarian Palace Department, the City of Burghausen, and the State Collections of Paintings Bavaria.

Family Day with Hands-on Activities

On Family Day, all three institutions jointly open their spaces with a colorful program for young and old. Hands-on activities, special guided tours, family tours, and interactive exhibits bring the castle's history, the Wittelsbach collection, and Burghausen's city history to life – designed for families with children of all age groups.

What to Expect

  • Hands-on activities throughout the castle complex
  • Special guided tours for families
  • Program by the Bavarian Palace Department
  • Participation of the Burghausen City Museum
  • Activities by the State Collections of Paintings Bavaria
  • Family-friendly opening hours from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM

Burghausen on the Salzach

Burghausen is a town in the Upper Bavarian district of Altötting, directly on the Salzach river and on the border with Austria. The castle shapes the cityscape and is also a tourist landmark. It regularly hosts special events, medieval markets, and theater formats; Family Day is one of the accessible formats that explicitly opens the castle to families.

Family Day Burghausen — edition 2026

The Family Day at Burghausen Castle 2026 takes place on Saturday, July 25, from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM. The Bavarian Palace Department, Burghausen City Museum, and State Collections of Paintings Bavaria jointly offer a colorful program with hands-on activities and guided tours in the world's longest castle complex.

The 2026 edition runs for a full day from 10 AM to 7:30 PM. Hands-on stations will be set up throughout the castle grounds, where children, parents, and grandparents can playfully experience various aspects of the castle's history. Family-guided tours with specific themes around the Middle Ages, the Wittelsbachs, and city history complement the program.

The event is organized by the Bavarian Palace Department in cooperation with the Burghausen City Museum and the State Collections of Paintings Bavaria. This brings together three institutions that otherwise work side-by-side at the castle into a joint family format.
