Traditional Christmas Market since 1585 on the Schlossplatz of the Lessing City
The Wolfenbüttel Christmas Market looks back on an exceptionally long history: Since 1585, a market has been held in the Lessing City during Advent – making it one of the oldest continuously maintained Christmas markets in Lower Saxony. The historical tradition is reflected in the market atmosphere, which consciously focuses on authenticity: wooden stalls, regional vendors, artisanal products, and a careful approach to lighting and decoration.
The venue is Wolfenbüttel's Schlossplatz, complemented by the adjacent alleys of the historic Old Town. The half-timbered scenery, the Lessing statue, and the silhouette of the castle create an atmosphere that is unparalleled in Lower Saxony. In winter, with snow or fine mist, the Lessing City unfolds its full charm.
Classic Christmas market specialties are served at the stalls: mulled wine and punch in numerous variations, roasted almonds, bratwurst, crêpes, and sweet temptations. Arts and crafts form a second focus: ceramics, jewelry, textiles, woodwork, and lovingly designed toys. Many vendors have been regular participants for years and shape the market with their own unique touch.
The musical program ranges from choir performances during Advent to brass ensembles and concerts in the churches of the Old Town. There are special program items for families: fairy tale readings, craft activities, and small hands-on stations that make a Christmas market visit a family experience.
In parallel to the Christmas Market, two other Christmas formats take place in Wolfenbüttel: the Advent Market at the Kommisse (on the four Advent weekends) and the Adventshof. This creates a dense network of Christmas events in the Lessing City, making multi-day visits worthwhile.
In 2026, the market will again be open daily for almost a whole month. The exact program dates for choir performances, concerts, and family activities will be published by the City of Wolfenbüttel in November.
The strength of the Wolfenbüttel Christmas Market lies in its relationship with the historic city backdrop. Walking through the Old Town in the evening offers a mix of history, the scent of mulled wine and almonds, soft music, and festive lighting that warms even the coolest of dispositions.
Detailed concert dates and family program will be published by the City of Wolfenbüttel in November.
