Six months of Palatinate wine on Sundays and public holidays – vintners and clubs take turns serving at the Sonnenberghütte with views of Alsace
The vintner's tavern at the Sonnenberghütte is one of the most charming wine experiences at the southernmost tip of the German Wine Route. For over six months – from May to the end of October – the hut above the twin town of Schweigen-Rechtenbach opens every Sunday and public holiday. Vintners and clubs take turns serving, so each weekend offers a slightly different programme.
Schweigen-Rechtenbach is the southernmost village on the German Wine Route. Here stands the famous German Wine Gate, a monumental sandstone gate erected in 1936, which opens (or closes) the Wine Route on the German side. A few steps further, France begins – the neighbouring Wissembourg and the Alsatian wine-growing region follow seamlessly. The Sonnenberghütte is located high above this hub, with a wide view over the Palatinate vineyards, the Wine Gate, and the Alsatian plain.
The Sonnenberghütte is a classic destination for hikers on the Pfälzer Weinsteig (Palatinate Wine Trail) as well as for walkers and families coming for a Sunday outing from Landau, Wissembourg, or nearby Bad Bergzabern. The walk from the car park at the German Wine Gate to the hut takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is well-marked. The wines served come directly from the Schweigen vintners – a generation known for its top wines; renowned estates such as Friedrich Becker or Bernhart are based here.
The hut's service model is exceptional: every Sunday and public holiday, a different vintner or club takes over the hut. This concept guarantees variety in the wine selection and, at the same time, broad participation from the village community. Those who visit the hut multiple times throughout the season will get to know the full spectrum of Schweigen's vintners – an experience that is rarely possible elsewhere.
The 2026 season continues the proven concept: rotating service by vintners and clubs, six months of wine experience with a view. The exact service schedule for 2026 (which vintner/club on which Sunday) will be published by the organiser in spring. The structure follows the established cornerstones of previous years.
