Pre-Christmas atmosphere in the Toy City — December 10-13, 2026 at Bahnhofsplatz
Sonneberg is located in southern Thuringia, in the Sonneberg district, right on the border with Bavaria (Coburg). For centuries, the city was the world capital of toys: in the 19th century, half of all toys traded worldwide came from Sonneberg. The German Toy Museum (founded in 1901, one of the oldest toy museums in Germany) bears witness to this tradition. The Christmas market builds on this identity — toys, children's books, and nursery atmosphere are not just commerce, but city history.
In 2026, the market will be open from Thursday, December 10th to Sunday, December 13th. The opening hours — Thursday 11 AM–7 PM, Friday 1 PM–8 PM, Saturday 1 PM–8 PM, Sunday 1 PM–7 PM — are officially confirmed by the city of Sonneberg. The application deadline for participating vendors was October 30, 2026. Those who have a stall were selected by the city from the applications — a quality control that shapes the offerings.
Unlike some commercialized big-city Christmas markets, Sonneberg focuses on Christmas items and regional specialties. Decorated wooden items from the nearby Thuringian Forest, nativity figures, handmade Christmas tree decorations, knitted socks, regional honeys from southern Thuringia, fine brandies from the Rennsteig — the offerings are designed for gift quality. Chocolate fruits and candied almonds make the market magical for children.
On the weekend, the Christkind greets visitors — a tradition that is particularly cherished in Sonneberg. Those visiting with children can combine their market visit with the German Toy Museum (a few minutes from Bahnhofsplatz). The museum offers special exhibitions on Christmas, toys, and children's culture during the Advent season — an ideal addition on a winter weekend in the Coburg Rennsteig region.
The 2026 date has been officially confirmed by the city of Sonneberg. The application deadline for participating vendors was October 30, 2026 — the city will publish the final stall list on its website in the weeks before the market. The focus remains on selling Christmas items and regional specialties: knitwear, honey, fine brandies, Christmas tree decorations, nativity figures.
The Christkind will be present on the weekend to greet visitors, especially families with children. Those arriving with children can ideally combine their market visit with the German Toy Museum — the museum offers special exhibitions on Christmas and toys during the Advent season.
