Sommerkirmes Ladbergen

A Funfair Since 1745

The Sommerkirmes Ladbergen is one of the oldest folk festivals in the northern Münsterland region. The first records date back to 1745 — at that time, it took place on September 12th. In 1959, a spring edition (April) was added, so Ladbergen has celebrated its funfair twice a year since then. The summer edition in August is now the larger and more popular one — embedded in the warm midsummer weather and the Münsterland funfair season.

When: August 15th to 17th, 2026

The 2026 funfair runs on the traditional date — the third weekend in August — from Saturday, August 15th, to Monday, August 17th, 2026:

• Friday, August 14th: 3:00 PM – 12:00 AM (Opening)
• Saturday, August 15th: 2:00 PM – 12:00 AM
• Sunday, August 16th: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM (Sunday opening hours for shops 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

Note: The opening on August 14th is often counted as part of the funfair; officially, the summer funfair runs from August 15th–17th.

Where: Kirchplatz and Alte Schulstraße

The funfair extends across the Kirchplatz and Alte Schulstraße in the center of Ladbergen — right in front of the Protestant church. The location in the town center makes the funfair particularly accessible on foot: no large parking lot atmosphere, but a funfair right in the middle of the village.

What You'll Find There

The classic Münsterland funfair with all the important elements:

• Children's carousels — carousel horses, miniature railway, bouncy castle
• Dodgems
• Stalls for games and prizes — strongman game, ring toss, lucky dips
• Snack stands with bratwurst, fries, almonds, crêpes
• Beer stands and sweet stalls
• Marquee with live band on Saturday evening

Traditional Highlights

Barrel Tapping by the Mayor

To open the funfair, the Mayor of Ladbergen traditionally performs the barrel tapping — a ceremonial opening where the first mugs of beer are served. A small gesture that visibly brings the mayor and the community together.

Children's Balloon Race

A highlight for the younger funfair visitors: the children's balloon race. Hundreds of balloons with postcards are released into the sky simultaneously — whoever's balloon flies the furthest and is returned wins a prize. A Münsterland funfair tradition.

Live Band on Saturday Evening

Saturday evening is dedicated to live music. A regional cover band plays in the marquee — party music, German Schlager, rock, and pop. Admission is usually free or involves a small fee.

Sunday Opening Hours for Shops

Sunday, August 16th, 2026, features Sunday opening hours for shops in Ladbergen — from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, retailers in the town center will open their doors. This combines a visit to the funfair with a shopping stroll — an important source of foot traffic for local retail.

Ladbergen — Municipality in the Tecklenburger Land

Ladbergen is located in the Steinfurt district in western Münsterland, on the edge of the Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburg Forest). Around 6,700 inhabitants, rural character, predominantly Protestant (unlike the mostly Catholic rest of Münsterland — Ladbergen is a Protestant linguistic island with Dutch traditions). The municipality is conveniently located on the A1 motorway between Münster and Osnabrück.

Local Tradition, Not a Big Event

The Sommerkirmes Ladbergen is consciously not a major event — it remains a local funfair with a community character. What makes it worth visiting is the mix of historical depth (almost 280 years of tradition), classic funfair atmosphere, and the characteristically relaxed Münsterland summer vibe. Visitors from Münster, Osnabrück, or Dortmund will experience a day in a community that consciously cultivates its summer funfair as a central community festival.
