Since 1998 — Joint exhibition of Pellworm painters and craftspeople
The summer exhibition of the Pellworm artists originated in 1998 from the desire of the painters and craftspeople living on the island to show their works together once a year — as a self-affirmation for the artist community and as a curated overview for island visitors. The exhibition has been running uninterrupted ever since and is one of the few annual art events on Pellworm.
The exhibits shown are very diverse in their thematic selection and execution: island views — Halligen, mudflats, marsh, lighthouse — form the classic core, alongside abstract painting, watercolors, prints, textile art made from natural materials (often sheep wool from the island), ceramics, jewelry, small sculptures made from driftwood, and maritime objects. The exhibitors are all personally connected to Pellworm — either as full-time islanders or as regular summer guests with their own studios.
The day after the regular exhibition ends — August 16, 2026 — a craft market will take place. Here, the artists will present their works again for direct sale, supplemented by other Pellworm craftspeople who were not represented in the main exhibition. A final opportunity for summer guests to take a piece of Pellworm art home with them.
Pellworm, with around 1,100 inhabitants, is one of the best-known North Frisian islands in the Wadden Sea. Historically, Pellworm emerged from the former large Hallig "Strand", which was torn into several parts by the Burchardi Flood in 1634. Today, the island is certified as an organic island and a model for ecological energy supply. Culturally, Pellworm is manageable but densely populated: the summer exhibition, the harbor festival, the organ summer in St. Salvator Church, and the choir music week are the most important summer dates.
This year's summer exhibition of the Pellworm artists follows the proven format since 1998: a curated joint exhibition over more than two weeks, concluded with a craft market on the following day. Detailed venues will be announced before the exhibition starts.
Admission is usually free or for a small contribution. Direct sales of works from the artists.
By ferry from the Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft (NPDG) from Strucklahnungshörn (Nordstrand). From Husum by car via the B 5 and the Beltringharder Koog to Strucklahnungshörn, then ferry. On Pellworm, there are rental bicycles at the harbor — the island is ideal for cycling and is the best way to explore the exhibition venues.
Admission is usually free or for a small contribution, purchase of artworks directly from the artists. The venue will be announced shortly before the exhibition starts — information from Pellworm Tourism and at pellworm.de.
