Sickinger Höhe – the Palatinate Potato Land

The Sickinger Höhe is a plateau in the Pfälzer Bergland, located between the Pfälzerwald and Kaiserslautern, with altitudes between 400 and 500 metres. The variegated sandstone soils, rich in minerals, yield potatoes whose flavour quality is renowned in the region. Over generations, the Sickinger farming families developed a potato cuisine that is among the most diverse in Germany. The Sickinger Grumbeere-Markt celebrates this heritage.

Over forty stalls

More than forty stalls present specialities revolving around the potato at the market. The spectrum is impressive: Hoorische (Palatinate dumplings made from raw potatoes, cooked for a long time, with a "hairy" surface), Brodgrumbeere (large baked potatoes in their skins), Rollbrode (a Palatinate potato roll), Kartoffelpuffer fried in cast iron, Röschti Swiss-style, Quetschekuche (plum cake) made with potato dough instead of yeast, potato salad in various variations, potato soup, potato pancakes, potato bread, potato schnapps, and potato liqueur. Anyone who comes here will be full after three hours and will have experienced a cross-section of Palatinate potato culture.

Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben municipal association as organiser

The organiser is the Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben municipal association, which has created a tourist hallmark with the Grumbeere-Markt. The market attracts thousands of visitors every year, far beyond the region, and is one of the most successful Volksfeste in the Westpfalz.

Eighteenth edition 2026

In 2026, the Sickinger Grumbeere-Markt celebrates its 18th edition. What began in 2008 as an initiative by dedicated farmers and municipal association employees has developed into a nationally recognised event. The exact date in 2026 will be communicated by the organiser in advance; typically, the market takes place on the first weekend of October (2025 edition = October 4th/5th).

Pfälzer Mühlenland as cultural context

Wallhalben belongs to the "Pfälzer Mühlenland" (Palatinate Mill Land), a branded tourist region that values the agricultural heritage of the Sickinger Höhe. Water mills, scattered fruit orchards, farms, and small producer businesses characterise the landscape. The Grumbeere-Markt is the highlight of this branding effort and makes the Mill Land visible.
