One Hall, One Pianist, One Orchestra
The ACO Thormannhalle on the Carlshütte grounds in Büdelsdorf is one of the most exciting venues of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Where the Carlshütte iron foundry once produced, contemporary art (NordArt) and classical music now meet — an industrial cathedral of red brick as a concert hall.
What to Expect
The concert evening World of Dance focuses on the theme of dance:
- Soloist: Jan Lisiecki — Canadian pianist of Polish origin, Deutsche Grammophon artist, one of the most respected pianists of his generation
- Orchestra: Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra — the SHMF orchestra composed of young top musicians from around the world
- Program: Piano works and orchestral pieces that musically showcase dance
- Atmosphere: Classical concert in an industrial hall — historic brick architecture, daylight through the high windows, with the NordArt exhibition running concurrently
The SHMF — Context
The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, founded in 1986 by Justus Frantz, is one of the largest classical music festivals in Europe. Every summer between July and August, it features around 200 concerts at approximately 130 venues across the state — from churches and thatched-roof farmhouses to shipyards and industrial monuments like the Carlshütte. The NordArt concerts are an integral part of this concept: top-class classical music in extraordinary industrial architecture.
Büdelsdorf and the Carlshütte
Büdelsdorf is located in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, directly on the Kiel Canal. The Carlshütte, founded in 1827, was once the largest iron foundry in Schleswig-Holstein. Since the end of industrial production in 1997, the site has been used for cultural purposes — the annual international art exhibition NordArt, with around 100,000 visitors, is one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in Europe.
