About SHMF Niebüll

The Christuskirche Niebüll has been one of the venues for the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF) for years — Germany's oldest and one of Europe's largest classical music festivals. During the festival weeks between early July and late August, chamber music concerts take place in the brick hall church built in 1729, with its wooden tower and approx. 300 seats. The intimate acoustics of the Christuskirche are particularly well-suited for string quartets, piano recitals, solo vocals, and smaller chamber music ensembles — as a contrast to the festival's large symphony and open-air concerts at other venues in Schleswig-Holstein.

Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival — the entire region becomes a concert hall

The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF) was founded in 1986 by conductor Justus Frantz and is now one of the largest classical music festivals in Europe. In the summer — between early July and late August — over 200 concerts take place at more than 100 venues in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Southern Denmark. The concept is unique: the festival does not use one central concert hall, but distributes the concerts throughout the entire federal state — from Kiel shipyards to pigsties (in the true sense of the word, as the festival has actually held concerts in a former pigsty in Dithmarschen) to small village churches.

The Christuskirche Niebüll

The Christuskirche Niebüll is a brick hall church built in 1729 with a wooden tower — a typical North Frisian village church from the 18th century. It is located at Kirchenstraße 6, in the center of the North Frisian district town of Niebüll. With approx. 300 seats, it is ideal for chamber music concerts — the acoustics are warm, the sound space is manageable, and the atmosphere is concentrated.

Niebüll — North Frisian transport hub

Niebüll is a town with around 10,700 inhabitants in the district of Nordfriesland (Schleswig-Holstein), an important railway junction on the line to Sylt and an intersection between the B5 federal road and the Danish border. The town is the seat of the Amt Südtondern and is culturally active (Friesisches Theater, Natural History Museum, Richard-Haizmann Museum of Modern Art).

Chamber music in a North Frisian setting

As in previous years, the Christuskirche will likely host chamber music concerts — string quartets, piano recitals, solo vocals, or small chamber ensembles. The intimate atmosphere of the church and its warm brick acoustics make it the ideal concert space for these formats.

Programme SHMF Niebüll 2026
