About Seebier-Kerwa

The Seebier-Kerwa is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of Großenseebach, a small municipality in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district of Middle Franconia. Organized by FSV Großenseebach (Football and Sports Club), the Kerwa spans five days on the first weekend of September and is a central part of village life. Despite the village's modest size (around 2,100 inhabitants), the Kerwa enjoys supra-regional renown: in 2024, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas was the guest of honor at the beer tapping ceremony. Program: Beer tapping on Wednesday evening, festival tent with live music, Franconian Kerwa traditions with Kärwabaum (maypole), Betzentanz (a traditional dance), and Friedgebot (a proclamation of peace and order).

A Village Kerwa with Supra-Regional Appeal

Großenseebach is a small municipality in the Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Bavaria), located about 15 km west of Erlangen, on the edge of the Heßdorf administrative district. The Seebier-Kerwa (also: Kerwa Großenseebach) is a classic Franconian village Kirchweih, organized every year on the first weekend of September by FSV Großenseebach. The name "Seebier" refers to the local festival beer, traditionally served during the Kerwa.

Five Days of Kerwa Program

Unlike many village Kerwas that are limited to the weekend, the Seebier-Kerwa extends over five days — from Thursday to Monday. The program follows the classic Franconian Kerwa schedule: Beer tapping on the first evening with the mayor or a guest of honor, raising of the Kärwabaum, festival tent operations with daily changing live music, Franconian specialties (Schäuferla, Bratwürste, Schweinshaxen, Kerwakrapfen), Betzentanz and Friedgebot by the Kärwaboum (young men) and Kärwamoidla (young women) in traditional Franconian attire on Sunday, Bärenausjagen (a traditional chase) on Kerwamontag (Kerwa Monday).

Guests of Honor and Political Visibility

Despite its village dimensions, the Seebier-Kerwa has developed into an event with visibility beyond Großenseebach. In 2024, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas was the guest of honor at the beer tapping ceremony — an exceptional visit for a Franconian village Kerwa, documenting the festival's social roots and the connection of political representatives with Franconian club life. Local district administrators, regional council members, and federal politicians are regular guests.

Organizer: FSV Großenseebach as the Club's Foundation

Behind the Kerwa stands the FSV Großenseebach — the local football and sports club. As with many Franconian village Kerwas, the proceeds from the festival tent and stalls go into the club's treasury: youth work, sports promotion, club life. The Kerwa is therefore not only a folk festival but also an essential pillar of the local club economy. Over a hundred volunteers organize the festival on a voluntary basis.

Atmosphere and Identity

The Seebier-Kerwa is an example of vibrant Franconian village festival culture. It combines the church's patronal feast (the Kirchweih of the parish church), rural and craft traditions (Kärwabaum, Betzentanz), and club life (FSV) into a rich festival week. Visitors come from Großenseebach itself, the neighboring communities of Heßdorf, Hannberg, and Röttenbach, as well as from the Erlangen region. The family-friendly atmosphere and its deep roots in tradition make it an authentic experience.

Seebier-Kerwa — edition 2026

The Seebier-Kerwa Großenseebach 2026 takes place from Thursday, September 3 to Monday, September 7, on the first weekend of September. Opening with beer tapping on Thursday evening in the festival tent of FSV Großenseebach, followed by five days of festival tent operation with live music, Franconian specialties, Kärwabaum raising, Betzentanz and Friedgebot in traditional attire on Sunday, Bärenausjagen on Kerwamontag. Free admission, proceeds benefit FSV Großenseebach.

The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the Seebier-Kerwa. The kick-off is the beer tapping on Thursday evening, traditionally by a guest of honor — mayor, district administrator, or higher-ranking politician. From Thursday to Monday, the festival tent operation with daily changing live music (regional bands, brass bands, cover bands) characterizes the town.

Sunday is dedicated to classic Franconian Kerwa traditions: a procession, Betzentanz, and Friedgebot by the Kärwaboum and Kärwamoidla in Franconian attire. On Kerwamontag, the traditional Bärenausjagen marks the festive end of the festival week. For many Großenseebach residents and visitors from neighboring communities, the Seebier-Kerwa is the central summer and autumn festival date.
