Traditional marksmen's festival of the Wietzendorf Parish Marksmen's Guild in the Lüneburg Heath
The Wietzendorf Parish Marksmen's Guild is a traditional association that brings together several districts of the Wietzendorf municipality. The club grounds, Unter Hartmanns Eichen, are located on the outskirts and include shooting ranges, a clubhouse, and ample space for the festival tent and amusement rides. The club's activities shape the social life in the village throughout the year.
The Schützenfest is the highlight of the club's year. The dates are announced by the board in spring. For 2026, the calendar marks June 4th as the central date – traditionally, the festival is celebrated over several days around this Thursday. The programme includes the king's shooting competition, a festive parade, the king's ball in the evening, and a family day with carousels and games.
The festive parade on Saturday afternoon winds its way through Wietzendorf's main street. Marksmen's companies in uniform, brass bands, marching bands, and decorated floats march from the club grounds through the village and back. The parade is well-attended and considered a visual highlight of the weekend.
On Saturday evening, the King's Ball is celebrated in the festival tent. The new marksmen's king is proclaimed, honoured, and awarded the king's chain. Live music accompanies the festivities late into the night. The queen, adjutants, and children's king are also honoured.
On Sunday, the festival grounds are open to families. Carousels, games, and food stalls provide the setting for a relaxed end to the festival. A morning pint with brass music in the festival tent kicks off the day.
Wietzendorf is located in the Heidekreis district south of Soltau and is characterised as a heath and farming village. The community has several active clubs, of which the Marksmen's Guild is one of the most traditional. The Schützenfest is the most important social event of the year.
The board of the Marksmen's Guild has set June 4, 2026, as the central date in the club calendar for the Schützenfest. Based on experience, the weekend around this Thursday will be celebrated, with an opening, the king's shooting competition, a festive parade on Saturday, and a family day on Sunday.
As in previous years, the king's shooting competition, festive parade, king's ball, and family day will form the backbone of the programme. Live music in the festival tent and amusement rides on the festival grounds will complement the offerings.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the organiser in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
