Werlte — Cultural Centre of the Hümmling

Werlte is the main municipality of the Samtgemeinde Werlte and sees itself as the cultural and economic centre of the Hümmling region in western Emsland. The Schützenbruderschaft St. Sebastianus is one of the oldest and most traditional clubs in the town and is part of the Federation of Hümmling Shooting Clubs. The patronage of Saint Sebastian — the patron saint of marksmen and soldiers — lends the brotherhood a special spiritual and cultural tradition.

Three Days of Festivities with Breakfast Buffet

The main festival in 2026 spans three days, from Saturday, July 18th, to Monday, July 20th. A special feature of the Werlte Schützenbruderschaft is the traditional breakfast buffet offered during the festival: with eggs, bacon, rolls, and other regional specialties, the buffet provides marksmen and guests with a hearty foundation for the festive days. Saturday is dedicated to the ceremonial opening with assembly and a festive evening, Sunday to the King's shooting and the King's proclamation, and Monday to the King's dinner and a festive conclusion.

King's Shooting and Hümmling Tradition

The King's shooting of the Werlte Schützenbruderschaft is a particularly coveted honour in Hümmling shooting culture. Whoever shoots down the last splinter of the wooden bird is proclaimed the King of the brotherhood and leads it as a representative for one year. The Werlte King participates in the festivals of friendly Hümmling clubs, thus underscoring the camaraderie within the Hümmling shooting family.
