Marksmanship in the Tecklenburger Land
Lengerich, with just under 22,000 inhabitants on the border between Münsterland and Tecklenburger Land, belongs to the Steinfurt district in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The town is characterized by vibrant club life — and marksmen's clubs are among the most important players in this network. Lengerich alone has several marksmen's clubs: Lengerich-Dorf (founded 1634), Lengerich-Bauerschaft (founded 1601), and the one presented here, Schützenverein Antrup e.V. (founded 1902), in the Antrup district. Each club organizes its own annual marksmen's festival on its own festival grounds.
The Schützenfest Tradition
Schützenfeste (marksmen's festivals) are the most important social events in the village communities of North Rhine-Westphalia — especially in the Münsterland, Sauerland, and Bergisches Land regions. They traditionally consist of three elements: the Königsschießen (the election of the new marksmen's king through a shooting competition on a wooden bird), the multi-day festival itself with a marquee, music, a parade through the town, and the Festmarsch (parade) of the marksmen in their historical attire. The club has been rooted in the village community for generations, all generations are involved, and the reigning marksmen's king (2026: Markus Budke) represents the club at official events throughout the year.
The Antrup Marksmen's Club
Antrup is a district of Lengerich. The Schützenverein Antrup e.V. was founded in 1902, making it over 120 years old. With its approximately 250 members today (estimated), the club is one of the central pillars of Antrup village life. Its own festival grounds, complete with space for a marquee and a shooting range, allow the annual marksmen's festival to be organized independently.
Program 2026 — Warm-up, Live Band, Children's Festival
The 2026 event week is carefully structured. The actual King's Shoot was brought forward to June 6, 2026, as a family afternoon at the Wechte shooting range — a deliberate separation of the sporting competition and the social festival. The main weekend from June 26 to 28 will then feature marquee programs: Opening on Friday with DJ WALKY, live party band ON THE ROX on Saturday, and traditional program and children's marksmen's festival on Sunday. The event concludes with the "Spiegeleieressen" on Monday, June 29 — the classic Westphalian breakfast tradition where the marksmen bid farewell to the festival week.
Schützenfest as a Cultural Form
Visitors from the Rhineland, southern Germany, or abroad will experience a cultural form that exists with this density nowhere else. Schützenfeste are not a folkloric spectacle for tourists, but a living social form: they regulate generational change, secure club finances, foster identity, and convey traditional values. Those not members of the club are explicitly welcome as guests — the marquee is open, admission is free, and the atmosphere is familial.
