Whitsun weekend at the Schützenplatz Twist-Mitte — King's shooting, festival parade, and Schützenball in the heart of the Emsland municipality
The municipality of Twist in the Emsland district grew from several moorland settlements that emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries on the vast moors south of Meppen. Twist-Mitte forms the central district of the municipality and, with the St. Georg Schützenverein (marksmen's club), houses one of the region's most traditional customs clubs. The choice of St. George as patron saint points to the connection between church life and village club culture, which is characteristic of many Emsland marksmen's clubs.
In the Catholic Emsland, Whitsun is traditionally a weekend full of traditional events. Many Schützenvereine — both in Twist and in the neighboring Samtgemeinden (collective municipalities) — hold their main festivals on Whitsun Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, leading to a dense festival culture. The St. Georg Twist-Mitte Schützenverein celebrates its festival on Whitsun Saturday, May 23rd, and Whitsun Sunday, May 24th, 2026.
As is customary at Emsland Schützenfeste, Saturday evening is dedicated to the grand Schützenball, where the dance band plays in the festival tent and the village community celebrates exuberantly. Sunday is dedicated to the Königsschießen (king's shooting), the sporting highlight of the festival. The new king is chosen from among the marksmen, who then chooses his queen and serves as the club's representative for one year. The king's proclamation, the king's dance, and the king's dinner mark the climax of Sunday evening.
Twist is a municipality with several active Schützenvereine in its various districts — including Rütenbrock, Hebelermeer, and Schöninghsdorf, in addition to Twist-Mitte. The clubs maintain reciprocal visits and guest festivals, so the festival season extends from May well into the summer. The Whitsun date for St. Georg Twist-Mitte is one of the early highlights and marks the start of the intensive festival season for the region's marksmen friends.
The Whitsun holidays in Twist-Mitte in 2026 will be entirely dedicated to the Schützenfest St. Georg. The exact program schedule will be announced by the club in spring 2026 and will follow the traditional format with a festival procession, king's shooting, king's dinner, and Schützenball. Whitsun, as an extended weekend, offers the ideal opportunity to experience Emsland traditions in their full breadth.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Whitsun Saturday, May 23rd, and Whitsun Sunday, May 24th, 2026.
