Schützenfest of the Schützengesellschaft Speyer 1529 from June 4th to 7th, 2026 at the Festplatz Bogenstraße — Volksfest of the second oldest marksmen's association in the Palatinate
The Schützengesellschaft Speyer was founded in 1529. With almost 500 years of club history, it is the second oldest marksmen's association in the Palatinate and one of the most traditional in Southern Germany. Its founding coincided with the early Reformation and the Imperial Diets of Augsburg — a time when civic marksmen's associations played an important civil and military role in the Free Imperial Cities. Speyer was a Free Imperial City at that time and the seat of the Imperial Chamber Court.
The venue for the Schützenfest is the festival grounds at Bogenstraße in Speyer. The name 'Bogenstraße' (Bow Street) itself hints at the tradition of marksmanship — the bow (and later the crossbow and rifle) were the historical shooting implements. The festival grounds offer ample space for the beer tent, shooting range, club stands, and general festivities.
The Schützenfest runs from Thursday, June 4th to Sunday, June 7th, 2026 — four days of festivities daily from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM. This opening hours structure — afternoon until late at night — is a classic Volksfest format. The daytime events tend to be more family-oriented, while the evenings are dedicated to the beer tent program with music, dancing, and social gatherings.
The focus is traditionally on marksmanship — even though modern Schützenfeste are often perceived more as popular festivals than sporting events. The 'Königsschießen' (King's Shooting competition) — determining the marksman king for the upcoming club year — is one of the traditional program points. The Schützengesellschaft Speyer actively engages in shooting sports year-round with various disciplines.
Alongside the shooting sport tradition, the Volksfest atmosphere defines the event. The beer tent offers Palatinate wine and beer, bratwurst, and local specialties. Festival music, dance evenings, club stands from local Speyer associations, and gatherings of old Speyer families are all part of the experience. It's an urban Schützenfest with a Palatinate flair — and at the same time, a piece of Speyer's city culture stretching back nearly half a millennium.
The 2026 edition runs over a classic Volksfest weekend. Thursday (opening day), Friday, Saturday (main festival day), and Sunday (closing day with the king's shooting competition) follow a set rhythm.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure will follow the proven benchmarks of previous years.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food and drinks are paid for in the beer tent.
