Main festival of the traditional marksmen's association of 1848
With its founding year of 1848, the Schneverdingen marksmen's association is one of the oldest in the Lüneburg Heath. Founded in the revolutionary year of 1848, a historically turbulent time, it follows the tradition of civic marksmen's societies that organized in many German cities during that era. With almost 180 years of history, the association is one of Schneverdingen's identity-forming institutions.
The festival spans four days, from Thursday to Sunday. Thursday is used for the preliminary shooting to clarify claims to the royal title and prepare the marksmen for the bird shooting. Friday marks the start of the festival with the Zapfenstreich (a military ceremony) and a dance evening. Saturday features the bird shooting, the king's proclamation, and the king's ball, while Sunday includes the festival parade, the king's dinner, and the family day.
The preliminary shooting on Thursday, June 4th at 7 PM is an important preparatory act and a tradition of the association. Here, the marksmen competing for the royal title are determined in an initial round. The results influence the strategy for the bird shooting on the weekend.
One week after the main festival, the association is hosting a jubilee marksmen's festival for pupils on the weekend of June 13-14, 2026. This allows the association to specifically promote young talent and give them their own platform. This cross-generational approach secures the association's future and distinguishes it from those focusing solely on the main festival.
The Schützenfest fits into the busy event calendar of the Heideblütenstadt Schneverdingen. With the Heath Blossom Festival in August, HöpenAir in June, the Snevern Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) in December, and numerous other festivals, Schneverdingen is one of the most active event locations in the Lüneburg Heath. The Schützenfest adds a historical anchor to this calendar.
The 2026 edition continues a 178-year history of the association. The festival preserves the classic forms of historical marksmen's customs while also developing them for younger generations.
The exact hourly schedule, including the bird shooting and festival parade, will be published by the association in spring 2026.
