Salzbergen — Rifle Festival Stronghold in the Southern Emsland

The municipality of Salzbergen in the Emsland district is located near the Dutch border and on the southwestern edge of the Emsland region. With seven independent rifle associations — Lemkershook, Hummeldorf, Bürgerschützen, Steide, Hubertus, Neumehringen, and another — the municipality boasts an exceptionally dense rifle festival landscape. The associations celebrate their festivals spread throughout the season from May to August, collectively forming the identity-defining customs network of the municipality.

Ascension Day as a Festival Date

Ascension Day is an important festival in the Catholic church year and, with the extended weekend, is ideally suited as a date for a rifle festival. The Lemkershook association has chosen this date for its main festival for generations, thus establishing a special connection between religious customs and the association's festival. In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14th — the association's festival will accordingly extend from Wednesday, May 13th (setup and opening) to Friday, May 15th (festival conclusion).

Three Festival Days at the Schützenplatz

The festival follows the proven structure of Emsland rifle festivals. On Wednesday evening, the riflemen gather for a solemn opening with assembly and the first festival evening. Thursday — Ascension Day — is dedicated to the grand parade, the King's Shoot, and the proclamation of the new king. Friday brings the conclusion of the festival weekend with the King's Dinner, the King's Dance, and the festive closing. Throughout all three days, the festival tent offers catering, dance music, and a setting for the meeting of association members and guests.

Embedded in Salzbergen's Rifle Culture

Lemkershook is part of a dense network of rifle associations in Salzbergen. Throughout the season, the festivals of the Neumehringen (mid-June), Hummeldorf (late June), Bürgerschützen (mid-July), Steide (late July), Hubertus (early August) rifle associations, and others follow. The reciprocal visits of the associations create a vibrant festival life that shapes the municipality from May to August.
