Hummeldorf as a Salzbergen Marksmen's Association
The Hummeldorf marksmen's association is part of the network of seven marksmen's associations in the municipality of Salzbergen in southwestern Emsland. Salzbergen's marksmen's culture is one of the densest and most vibrant in the region: from May to August, festival follows festival, and each association has its fixed date in the annual calendar. The Hummeldorf date on the fourth weekend of June is one of the early June dates and falls between the festivals of the other Salzbergen associations.
Three Days of Festivities in June
In 2026, the festival will span three days from Friday, June 26th to Sunday, June 28th. Friday is dedicated to the ceremonial opening with assembly and an evening celebration in the tent. Saturday features the grand marksmen's ball with dance music until late into the night. Sunday is dedicated to the king's shooting, the proclamation of the king, the king's dinner, and the king's dance. Catering is provided continuously in the festival tent, and local bands provide the festive accompaniment.
King's Shooting and Tradition
The king's shooting is the sporting and symbolic highlight of every Emsland marksmen's festival. During the shooting at the wooden bird, the marksmen compete for the title of king. Whoever shoots down the last splinter is proclaimed king and chooses his queen. The new royal couple represents the association for one year at guest festivals and events and carries the association's banner on festive occasions.
Embedded in the Salzbergen Festival Season
Salzbergen celebrates its marksmen's festivals spread throughout the season: In May, Lemkershook and Neumehringen open the season, Hummeldorf follows at the end of June, in July the Bürgerschützen (second weekend of July) and Steide (third weekend of July) join in, and in August the Hubertus-Schützen conclude the series. This order has developed over generations and creates a dense, coordinated network of festivals that significantly shapes the municipality.
