About Schützenfest Hubertus Salzbergen

The Hubertus Rifle Association Salzbergen e.V. celebrates its annual Schützenfest (riflemen's festival) on the second weekend of August 2026, from August 8th to 10th. Named after Saint Hubertus — the patron saint of hunters and riflemen — the association cultivates a particularly strong connection between Christian religious tradition and the riflemen's fraternity. Three days of festivities bring together members, families, and guests on the Schützenplatz (riflemen's grounds) for assembly, parade, King's shooting, riflemen's ball, King's dinner, and a festive conclusion. As one of the seven active riflemen's associations in the municipality of Salzbergen, the Hubertus Association concludes the intensive Salzbergen Schützen season with its August festival.

Saint Hubertus as Patron Saint

Saint Hubertus of Liège (655–727) is the patron saint of hunters and riflemen in Catholic Christianity. His feast day on November 3rd is one of the most important commemoration days in the riflemen's tradition, and numerous riflemen's associations in predominantly Catholic regions of Germany have chosen Saint Hubertus as their patron. The Hubertus Rifle Association Salzbergen joins this tradition, underscoring the close connection between the riflemen's fraternity and Catholic piety, which is characteristic of the southwestern Emsland and the adjacent Münsterland regions.

Three Days of Festivities in August

The 2026 festival spans three days, from Saturday, August 8th, to Monday, August 10th. Saturday marks the festive opening with the riflemen's assembly, a parade, and a grand riflemen's ball in the evening. Sunday is dedicated to the King's shooting competition, the proclamation of the new King, and the King's dance. Monday concludes the festivities with the King's dinner and a celebratory closing. Catering is provided throughout in the festival tent, and local music bands ensure a festive atmosphere.

King's Shooting and Tradition

The King's shooting is the central sporting and symbolic highlight for the Hubertus Association as well. Riflemen compete for the title of King by shooting at a wooden bird. Whoever shoots off the last splinter is proclaimed King and chooses his Queen. The new royal couple represents the association for one year and carries the association's banner at festive occasions.

Season Finale of the Salzbergen Rifle Festivals

The Hubertus festival on the second weekend of August marks the crowning conclusion of the intensive Salzbergen Schützen season, which runs from May to August. Following the associations Lemkershook (Ascension Day), Neumehringen (mid-June), Hummeldorf (late June), Bürgerschützen (second weekend of July), and Steide (third weekend of July), the Hubertus riflemen bring the season to a close, ushering the community into the quieter late summer period.
