Traditional folk and marksmen's festival of the Rethmar Marksmen's Association since 1924
The Rethmar Marksmen's Association (Schützenverein Rethmar von 1924 e.V.) looks back on over a century of club history. The annual Schützenfest is the most visible expression of this tradition — and a social focal point that extends beyond the association's borders. Rethmar, a district of the town of Sehnde in the southeastern outskirts of Hannover, retains a part of its village identity through the festival, even though the proximity to the big city and the incorporation into the town of Sehnde are increasingly changing the rural character.
The festival takes place every year on the last weekend of July — a tradition that was reaffirmed by the 100th anniversary in 2024. Three days structure the course of the festival. Friday evening marks the festive start with the opening, a gathering, and the first dance evening. Saturday is dedicated to competitions — especially the king's shooting — as well as receptions and a grand dance evening. Sunday concludes with a church service, a parade through Rethmar, the crowning of the new monarchs, and the king's ball.
The festival grounds on Triftstraße in Rethmar are the traditional venue. The festival tent is set up here, amusement rides find their place here, and shooting galleries and food stalls create a classic folk festival atmosphere. In the surrounding area, club members and friendly organizations provide the logistics required for a three-day festival — from electricity and catering to security.
As with most Schützenfeste in Lower Saxony, the Schützenfest Rethmar would not be possible without the commitment of countless helpers. Club members, friendly clubs, the fire department, and the marksmen's families organize the festival together. For Rethmar — and for many residents of Sehnde — it is an occasion to meet, celebrate together, and make a piece of village identity visible.
From July 24 to 26, 2026 (date based on the pattern of the last weekend of July), the Rethmar Marksmen's Association (Schützenverein Rethmar von 1924) will host the traditional Schützenfest. For three days, the Triftstraße festival grounds will be characterized by a parade, king's shooting competition, dance evenings, and a folk festival atmosphere.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Rethmar Marksmen's Association in the summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
