Traditional Schützenfest of the Schützengesellschaft Oberlahnstein 1848 on the first weekend of August
The Schützengesellschaft e.V. Oberlahnstein 1848 – SGE Oberlahnstein for short – is one of Lahnstein's oldest associations. Founded in 1848, the year of the bourgeois revolutions in Germany, it is deeply rooted in the city's history.
The annual Schützenfest on the first weekend of August is the social and traditional highlight of the association's year. For three or four days, the Oberlahnstein festival grounds transform into a venue where tradition and Volksfest character come together.
The centerpiece is the crowning of the king and majesties. Whoever made the best shot in the previous year's king's shooting competition reigns as Schützenkönig (King of Marksmen) for a year – and passes on his crown to the next winner in the new year. The crowning is a solemn ritual that makes the association and its connection to the city visible.
The parade with association flags, guards, music bands, and dignitaries is a highlight of the weekend and shapes the cityscape of Oberlahnstein during these days. Shooting competitions form the sporting element of the festival, while also serving to renew the royal title.
The festival tent hosts the social evenings: live music, dancing, catering, and encounters with association members and citizens of Oberlahnstein.
The estimated date for 2026 is the first weekend of August, approximately August 1-2, 2026.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition maintained since 1848. The Schützenfest is one of the oldest and most socially deeply rooted events in Lahnstein's calendar.
