Traditional Schützenfest in the mining town of Lautenthal from July 25 to 26, 2026 — two-day festival weekend of the Oberharz Rifle Association.
Lautenthal is one of the historic mining towns of the Upper Harz and today a district of the town of Langelsheim. Mining in the Lautenthal region has a centuries-old tradition and still shapes the identity of the place today. Former miners, industrial facilities, the mining museum, and the mining and smelting history are omnipresent. The shooting tradition in Lautenthal is part of this mining town tradition and represents an element of living customs preservation.
The 2026 Schützenfest extends over two days. The dates July 25–26 have been confirmed by the calendar of the Clausthal Rifle Society as part of the Oberharz Rifle Association. The compact weekend format allows for a concentrated festival experience with all the important program points of a classic Schützenfest.
The Lautenthal Rifle Society is part of the Oberharz Rifle Association — an umbrella organization that unites the historic rifle societies of the Oberharz mining towns. This regional networking ensures that the Schützenfeste of the individual mining towns are always meeting points for the entire Oberharz shooting community. Friendly clubs from Clausthal, Zellerfeld, Sankt Andreasberg, and other places participate in the festive procession and the program.
The program follows the classic structure of a North German Schützenfest: Opening evening with tapping on Saturday morning, king's shooting, rifle mass or festive service, festive procession through Lautenthal, reception of friendly clubs, dance evening with live music in the festival tent, morning pint on Sunday, family day with children's program, and proclamation of the new rifle king as the festive highlight.
The special atmosphere of Lautenthal — characterized by wooden houses, mining history, and the unique Upper Harz landscape — gives the Schützenfest a distinctive character that clearly differs from Schützenfeste in flatter regions of Germany.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the Lautenthal Rifle Society. Friendly clubs from the other Oberharz mining towns are expected for the festive procession.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
