Lathen and the Dünefehn district

Lathen is the central municipality of the Samtgemeinde Lathen in the northern Emsland region. Its location on the western edge of the Hümmling and on the river Ems shapes the geography of the municipality, whose various districts each have their own distinct club and festival cultures. Dünefehn is one of these districts and is home to the Lathen-Dünefehn marksmen's association, which maintains its Schützenplatz on Kanalstraße. The location by the canal — presumably the Dortmund-Ems Canal or a waterway in its vicinity — gives the Schützenplatz its special character.

Family and youth orientation

The explicit self-description as a family and youth event distinguishes the Lathen-Dünefehn festival from some classically tradition-oriented Schützenfeste. Here, the focus is on involving the younger generations: young marksmen are specifically encouraged, separate youth king's shooting events may take place, and families will find offerings tailored to children and families. In this way, the association positions itself as a future-oriented proponent of the marksmen's tradition, not preserving it as a museum piece, but carrying it forward vibrantly.

Festival weekend

The 2026 festival extends over the weekend of July 25th and 26th. Saturday offers the festive opening with the assembly of the marksmen, a parade, and a grand marksmen's ball in the evening. Sunday is dedicated to the king's shooting, the proclamation of the new king, and the king's dance. Catering is provided in the festival tent, and the program includes activities for all age groups — from games and activities for children to dance music for young and old in the evening.

Embedded in the Samtgemeinde Lathen

The Samtgemeinde Lathen is home to numerous marksmen's associations in its various districts and municipalities. The Lathen-Dünefehn festival is part of a busy festival calendar and is also attended by guests from friendly marksmen's associations in the region. The combination of tradition and family orientation makes it one of the notable Schützenfeste in the western Hümmling area.
