Opening weekend of the Advent season in Zweibrücken with a light spectacle at the palace and Sunday shopping
A few days before the first Advent, the Zweibrücken city centre transforms into a luminous festival ground. The Zweibrücker Lichterfest, organised by the association Gemeinsamhandel Zweibrücken, heralds the festive pre-Christmas period and attracts thousands of visitors from Westpfalz, Saarland, and neighbouring Lorraine to the city every year. In 2026, the Lichterfest will take place from Friday, 27 November to Sunday, 29 November. The first Advent in 2026 falls on 29 November, making the weekend also the official start of the Advent season.
The motto 'Lights of Christmas' shapes the entire appearance of the festival in 2026. The centrepiece is a spectacular light spectacle with fire elements, which will be staged on Sunday, 29 November, in front of the impressive facade of Zweibrücken Palace. Large-scale light projections, choreographed lighting, pyrotechnics, and musical accompaniment create an impressive show that makes the historic architecture shine in a new light. The surrounding streets and squares are also adorned with festive light installations, transforming the city centre into a winter wonderland of lights.
On Sunday, 29 November 2026, the shops in the city centre will open their doors for a Sunday shopping event, offering an opportunity for relaxed Christmas shopping. At the same time, a special edition of the popular monthly flea market will take place on Schlossplatz, complementing the Lichterfest with bric-a-brac, antiques, and vintage treasures. Stalls offering mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, sausages, crêpes, and sweet specialities will cater to culinary delights. Choirs, bands, and associations take turns on an open-air stage, contributing to the festive atmosphere with Christmas tunes.
The Lichterfest is organised by the association Gemeinsamhandel Zweibrücken in close cooperation with the City of Zweibrücken, local traders, associations, and schools. The collective decoration of the city centre begins on Friday, 27 November, creating the backdrop for the weekend. With the Lichterfest, the association signals its commitment to revitalising the city centre and creates a framework in which trade, gastronomy, culture, and the community become equally visible. The festival complements the Christmas market, which starts a week later, thus shaping the beginning of the pre-Christmas peak season in Zweibrücken.
The Lichterfest extends over the entire weekend, offering different programme points at all times of the day. While the light installations unfold their full effect after dark, the daytime invites you to stroll through the flea market, shop during the Sunday opening hours, and linger sociably at the stalls. Family programmes, concerts, and small surprises round off the weekend.
The exact time of the light spectacle and the complete stage programme will be announced by the organiser in November 2026 at gemeinsamhandel-zw.de.
