Traditional August Schützenfest of the Jork-Borstel Marksmen's Association — King's Day on the fourth Sunday in August
The Jork-Borstel Marksmen's Association is one of the pillars of club life in Borstel. Like many marksmen's associations in the Altes Land, it is not only active in sports but also fulfills social functions — from village customs and youth work to the annual celebration of the king.
Jork is a municipality in the Stade district and is considered the tourist heart of the Altes Land. The Altes Land is the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in Northern Europe, with its characteristic mix of apple blossoms in spring and fruit harvest in autumn. Borstel is one of Jork's districts with its own distinct village character and active club life.
The Schützenfest follows a fixed date: King's Day traditionally falls on the fourth Sunday in August. In 2026, this is August 23rd. This fixed date allows families and guests to firmly incorporate the Schützenfest into their annual plans and enables friendly associations to coordinate their participation in good time.
The festival weekend begins on Friday evening with the opening of the festivities and a dance evening in the festival tent. On Saturday, the focus is on the bird shooting contest to determine the new king and queen. The proclamation of the king, with the handover of the king's chain, is the emotional highlight of the festival weekend. On Sunday, the traditional King's Day, the grand parade takes place through Borstel, accompanied by marching bands and friendly associations.
The parade on Sunday brings together marksmen's associations from the Altes Land and the Stade district. Residents decorate houses and streets. Dance evenings with live music and DJs take place in the festival tent. A dedicated family area with children's activities, a children's marksmen's festival, and a fairground with food stalls completes the program.
The fixed date ensures reliability in annual planning. August 23rd, 2026, is King's Day — the highlight of the festival weekend.
The Marksmen's Association will publish the detailed program with time slots in the summer of 2026.
