City Marksmen Festival of the oldest Marksmen's Society in Germany — founded 1387
The Allgemeine Schützengesellschaft (General Marksmen's Society) of Lüneburg, founded in 1387, is one of the oldest marksmen's societies in Germany. Its founding in 1387 occurred at a time when Lüneburg was rising to become one of the wealthiest cities in Northern Germany through the salt trade. In that era, marksmen's societies and guilds were central to urban defense — they organized the citizen militias that defended the city walls in times of conflict and regularly held shooting practice in peacetime. From this dual military-civilian role, today's marksmen's clubs evolved over the centuries into social and sporting organizations.
Unlike the rural village marksmen's festivals of the region, the ASG Lüneburg's City Marksmen Festival has a distinctly representative character. The city leadership is regularly present, representatives of neighboring marksmen's organizations are invited, and the formal ceremony in the marksmen's hall follows more formal rites than at the folk-festival-style village marksmen's festivals. The focus is on the king's shoot and the proclamation of the new city marksmen kings, who represent the city and the society for one year as ASG representatives.
In addition to the City Marksmen Festival, the ASG cultivates a diverse club life with sporting competitions in classic disciplines — small-bore rifle, air rifle, pistol, archery. The ASG's shooting ranges are among the best-equipped in the region. Younger marksmen and aspiring athletes receive thorough training. The ASG is a member of the Lüneburg Marksmen's District and regularly represents it at state and federal levels.
With the ASG, Lüneburg has a marksmen's organization of outstanding historical significance — combined with the city's and surrounding area's other marksmen's societies and guilds, it forms a network that has shaped the social life of the Hanseatic city for centuries. Together with the Schützengilde von 1612 Bardowick (Marksmen's Guild of 1612 Bardowick), the City Marksmen Festival is one of the most historically significant marksmen's festivals in the entire region.
Unlike the folk-festival-style marksmen's festivals in the villages, the ASG Lüneburg's City Marksmen Festival has a distinctly representative character with the participation of city dignitaries and friendly societies. The exact program structure and the formal ceremony follow the internal traditions of the society, which have developed over more than six centuries of ASG history.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the society. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
