Traditional village fair in the Rhön, organized by the Kolping Family
The Schönau Kermes is the traditional village fair (Kirchweih) of Schönau an der Brend, a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld. The word "Kermes" is the regional term for Kirchweih — a festival that, far beyond its religious occasion, forms the social highlight of the village year.
The Kermes is organized by the Kolping Family Schönau, which firmly includes the festival in its event calendar. The association's commitment carries the tradition from generation to generation, ensuring that the Kirchweih tradition remains alive. The association's logo traditionally depicts a dancing couple — a symbol of the festive character of the Kermes.
In the Rhön, the Kermes traditionally includes dancing, hearty cuisine, beer, and the convivial gathering of young and old. Such village fairs are deeply rooted in the region's identity and are an important part of the Lower Franconian festival calendar.
Schönau an der Brend is located in the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park in the Rhön-Grabfeld district, at the foot of the high Rhön mountains. In addition to the Kermes in November, various associations organize other festivals throughout the year, including the Beer Cellar Festival by the Fosenöchter in June — the Kermes is a separate festival from this.
The Schönau Kermes 2026 is announced on the Kolping Family Schönau's event page for the weekend of November 7th to 8th. The Kolping Family is organizing the event as a traditional village fair.
As is customary for Kirchweih festivals in the Rhön, the Kermes brings the village community together for dancing, hearty food, and beer. The detailed program will be announced by the Kolping Family closer to the date.
