Schöningen Wine Festival in the Prison Courtyard

Old Prison as a Backdrop

The Old Prison Schöningen is a historic building complex with a courtyard, now serving as a cultural venue and memorial site. The courtyard, framed by old walls, offers an exceptionally intimate atmosphere for social occasions. As the sun sets and the fairy lights turn on, a magical place is created.

Saale-Unstrut Wines

The Saale-Unstrut wine region begins about 80 km southeast of Schöningen, around Naumburg, Freyburg, and Bad Sulza, and is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Europe. On approximately 800 hectares of vineyards, mainly white grape varieties grow — Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, and Riesling. The cool climatic conditions result in particularly fine, mineral wines with a distinct acidity.

Regional Catering

The wine is accompanied by regional culinary specialties — cheese, ham, bread, tarte flambée, quiches, and autumnal appetizers. The organizers rely on regional producers and Schöningen gastronomy partners.

Verkehrsverein Schöningen e.V.

The organizer is the Verkehrsverein Schöningen e.V., which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. The wine festival is a regular part of the association's repertoire and complements its commitment to tourism and local heritage in the Helmstedt region.

An Evening to Linger

The Wine Festival in the Prison Courtyard is explicitly not a large event, but an intimate format for around 100–200 guests. Those who come should take their time — for good conversations, wine in peace, and the special ambiance of the place.
