Northern German Team Tournament with Hand-Carved Oak Plaques
Schleuderball is hardly known outside of Northwest Germany, but it is firmly anchored in village culture in the Wesermarsch. In the game, two teams throw a heavy leather ball with two leather loops as far as possible into the opponent's field. Skilled throwers can achieve distances of over 50 meters. The Plakettentag in Diekmannshausen is an important date in the Northern German Schleuderball calendar and attracts teams from numerous communities in the Wesermarsch and neighboring districts every year.
The competition is held as a tournament, with initial group play before the best teams face each other in the semi-finals and final. A total of around 30 teams with over 300 players participate. The trophies are a special feature: they are not cups, but lovingly hand-carved oak plaques, which are newly made each year. They bear the year, the club name, and a carved motif, and are considered valuable trophies in the clubs.
A village folk festival has developed around the actual tournament. Grandstands and a large festival tent offer space for several hundred spectators. Bratwurst, cake from the local women's club, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks are naturally part of it. Families use the day to meet, see acquaintances from neighboring communities again, and experience a piece of Northern German sports culture together, which is rarely cultivated elsewhere.
The 2026 edition falls on the first Sunday in August. As in previous years, the tournament will be held in group stages, intermediate rounds, and finals. The games typically run from morning until late afternoon, with the award ceremony taking place in the early evening in the festival tent.
Beyond the purely sporting dimension, the Plakettentag is a village gathering with a family character. Children can play on the adjacent playground while adults follow the tournament.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Bratwurst, fries, cake, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks will be available in the festival tent.
