Traditional autumn fair in Schleswig city center
The Schleswiger Peermarkt — 'Pferdemarkt' in Low German, 'horse market' in Danish, where the tradition has its roots — is one of the most traditional autumn fairs in Schleswig-Holstein. Today, horse trading is naturally no longer the focus — what remains is the name and the tradition of a four-day Volksfest (popular festival) in Schleswig's city center.
The city center of Schleswig is completely transformed for four days. Showmen set up carousels, a Ferris wheel, roller coaster modules, bumper cars, shooting galleries, and game stalls — the entire operation is coordinated by the Schaustellerverband Schleswig-Holstein (Showmen's Association of Schleswig-Holstein).
The market offers 'a wide selection of autumn delicacies — from candied almonds and Schmalzkuchen to filled spaghetti ice cream stands and hearty snacks'. With the cool September air and the approaching evenings, the Schleswiger Peermarkt has a very special charm — a Volksfest that marks the transition from summer to autumn.
Schleswig is located at the inner end of the Schlei fjord and is the administrative seat of the Schleswig-Flensburg district. The city combines Viking heritage (Haithabu just outside the gates), baroque palace architecture (Gottorf), and Renaissance ensembles (Holm). The Peermarkt is part of its vibrant, citizen-friendly event tradition — not a high-culture festival, but a genuine Volksfest, supported by the city administration.
The Peermarkt 2026 is officially scheduled from September 4th to 7th, 2026. The dates were jointly coordinated by the city of Schleswig and the Schaustellerverband Schleswig-Holstein and published in the official market calendar 2026.
Classic North German autumn fair with modern and traditional rides. Showmen from Schleswig-Holstein and beyond travel with their carousels and stalls.
