Advent Magic in the Viking City
The Schleswig Christmas Market at Capitolplatz is the central Advent attraction in the historic Viking city on the Schlei. Schleswig itself is one of the oldest cities in Northern Germany – the Viking settlement of Haithabu on the southern bank of the Schlei is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and today's city center with its cathedral and Gottorf Castle forms the backdrop for the market at Capitolplatz.
Market Offerings
The assortment is classically North German:
- Advent wreaths and Advent arrangements from regional workshops
- Fur goods and wool clothing
- Honey and honey products from local beekeepers
- Sheep's milk products from Schleswig-Holstein
- Mulled wine and bratwurst as classic market stalls
- Christmas decorations, candles, and jewelry
Program and Atmosphere
Spread throughout the Advent season:
- Live music from various bands and choirs
- Storytelling sessions for children
- Visit from St. Nicholas on December 6th
- Advent concerts in the nearby Schleswig Friedrichsberg Church
Region: Viking City Schleswig, Schleswig-Flensburg District
Schleswig is located at the southern end of the Schlei, the longest fjord arm on the German Baltic Sea coast. The city has around 25,000 inhabitants and is the district capital of the Schleswig-Flensburg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the Christmas market at Capitolplatz, other markets take place during Advent – including the multi-day Schwahlmarkt and a Christmas market in the City Museum. Those visiting the market at Capitolplatz should plan a walk through the old town with Holm, Cathedral, and Gottorf Castle.
