Two days of Christmas market with Sunday shopping in Leverkusen's Schlebusch district
Leverkusen, with almost 165,000 inhabitants in the right-bank Rhine corridor between Cologne and Düsseldorf and the headquarters of the Bayer Group, is a comparatively young city — it was only formed in 1930 by merging several municipalities. Precisely because of this, the individual districts retain a strong identity to this day. Schlebusch, one of Leverkusen's largest districts, is considered the city's living room with its market square, Bergische Landstraße, and historic pedestrian zone — cozier than the tidy, functional Wiesdorf center, closer to the Bergisches Land region in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Schlebusch Christmas Market is organized by the Werbegemeinschaft Schlebusch (online at schlebusch-online.net), supported by local retailers. The concept is compact and manageable: one weekend, about 50 stalls along Bergische Landstraße, at Arcadenplatz, and at Lindenplatz. They sell arts and crafts, ceramics, antiques, handmade gifts, and Christmas specialties. Mulled wine, roasted almonds, and potato pancakes complement the gastronomic offerings.
A special feature of the market is its connection to local retail: on the festive Sunday, Schlebusch shops open their doors for Sunday shopping from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thus, the market serves two functions — it is an Advent festival and economic promotion. Especially at a time when local shopping streets are under pressure from online retail, a well-attended Christmas market is vital for the survival of the pedestrian zone.
In contrast to the large Leverkusen Christmas markets — the Christkindchenmarkt in Wiesdorf or the Bergisches Dorf in Opladen — the Schlebusch Christmas Market is small, personal, and very local. The stalls are mostly run by Schlebusch residents themselves or by local clubs (Scouts, church communities, sports clubs, carnival societies). Visitors meet neighbors, their children's teachers, former club members. It's a neighborhood festival in a market format.
The Schlebusch Christmas Market fits into a dense Rhenish-Bergisch Advent calendar. Within a 30-minute radius, at the same time, the Cologne Roncalliplatz market, the Düsseldorf Königsallee market, the Engelsmarkt am Dom, the Solingen Christmas market, and the Bergisch-Gladbach Sankt-Laurentius market take place. Schlebusch doesn't compete with the big ones — it offers an alternative for those who want to avoid the tourist crowds and stay in their own neighborhood.
The Schlebusch Christmas Market will take place in 2026 on the weekend of the second Advent: Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6. The organizer is the Werbegemeinschaft Schlebusch (Schlebusch Online).
Detailed daily program and exact performance times of the choirs will be published at the end of November 2026 on the channels of the Werbegemeinschaft Schlebusch.
