Traditional Palatinate Schlachtfest in the historic winery cellar with VDP wine pairing
The Schlachtfest has a centuries-old tradition in rural Palatinate. Originally, it was a practical occasion: when a pig was slaughtered on the farm, all parts had to be processed as quickly as possible — sausages made, sauerkraut pickled, liver dumplings cooked, and Schlachtplatten served fresh. Today, the Schlachtfest has established itself in many Palatinate farms, wineries, and restaurants as a culinary event that celebrates regional cuisine in its original form. Weingut Münzberg continues this tradition, making the Schlachtfest a highlight of its event calendar.
The Schlachtfest at Weingut Münzberg takes place in the historic winery cellar — an environment with vaulted ceilings, wooden beams, and the special atmosphere of an old Palatinate winery, creating precisely the right mood for the occasion. Long tables are joined together to form a communal feast table where guests can sit and enjoy the hearty food in good company.
The Schlachtplatte, the centerpiece of the evening, typically includes blood and liver sausage, Saumagen with potatoes, roast pork, liver dumplings, and sauerkraut. This is complemented by other Palatinate classics such as Hausmacher Wurst (homemade sausage), Wellfleisch (boiled pork belly), fresh bread rolls, and sweet desserts. The wine pairing features selected wines from Weingut Münzberg, which, as a member of VDP.Pfalz, belong to the region's top wines. Riesling, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, and Palatinate specialties harmonize with the hearty dishes.
The Schlachtfest is designed as a small event with limited seating. Unlike the large wine festivals of the region, this format focuses on intimacy, concentration, and personal exchange between the vintner, the kitchen, and the guests. This exclusivity makes the event a insider tip for lovers of authentic regional food culture.
The 2026 Schlachtfest continues the tradition of the event at Weingut Münzberg. In the early winter season, when outdoor conditions are unpleasant and a hearty meal in a convivial atmosphere is particularly appealing, the winery invites you to this authentic evening of indulgence. The combination of a historic cellar, hearty Palatinate cuisine, and top VDP-level wines is an experience that few addresses in the Palatinate can offer in this form.
