Schifferstadt Spring Market

The Schifferstadter Frühlingsmarkt is one of the first major open-air events in the Vorderpfalz calendar. On the last weekend of April, shops around Kreuzplatz and the main street open for an 'verkaufsoffener Sonntag' (open Sunday), while the pedestrian zone becomes a lively market. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors stroll among stalls selling plants, arts and crafts, and food – usually in mild spring weather that draws the 'Sattelstadt' (Saddle City) out of its winter slumber with its typical Palatinate sociability.

Plant Swap at the Heart of the Event

A special feature of the Spring Market is the Pflanzentauschbörse (plant swap), held annually under the motto 'Swap a small perennial for...'. Residents bring surplus seedlings, perennials, herbs, bulbs, or seeds from their own gardens and exchange them for other plants free of charge. Those without plants to swap can leave donations for a good cause. The swap not only promotes biodiversity in local gardens but also fosters exchange between hobby gardeners of different generations.

Arts, Crafts, and Culinary Delights

Regional artisans showcase their work around Kreuzplatz: ceramics, textiles, jewelry, wood objects, and natural cosmetics. Food trucks, club stands, and Schifferstadt's gastronomy provide refreshments with 'Flammkuchen', crêpes, bratwurst, ice cream, and drinks. Direct farm marketers from the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis are also present, offering asparagus, strawberries, and other seasonal products from the renowned Vorderpfalz horticultural region.

Family Program and Community Life

The youngest visitors can enjoy a children's program with games, a carousel, and hands-on activities. Schifferstadt clubs traditionally use the Spring Market to present themselves to the public and attract new members. The official opening at 11 a.m. is usually performed by Mayor Ilona Volk, often accompanied by musical performances from local clubs. With its blend of shopping, gardening joy, and a cozy atmosphere, the Spring Market is a perfect Sunday outing for families from the entire Rhine-Neckar region.
