Autumnal Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Sand district on the second Sunday in October
The municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg consists of four districts, each with its own identity: the main towns of Schönenberg and Kübelberg, as well as the smaller districts of Schmittweiler and Sand. Each of these places has its own traditions, its own club life, and its own Kirchweih, celebrated at different times of the year. The Sander Kerwe on the second Sunday in October marks the autumnal conclusion of the Kirchweih series.
While the Schönenberger Kerwe still takes place in the height of summer in August, and the Kübelberger and Schmittweiler Kerwen conclude late summer in September, the Sander Kerwe falls in the midst of autumn: the leaves change color, the days are shorter, the first cold snaps herald winter. This atmosphere also shapes the festival culture — mixed wine spritzers (Schorlen) and warm drinks complement the classic beer and wine, hearty stews supplement the Palatinate sausages.
As with every Palatinate Kirchweih, Sunday often begins with a festive church service in the local chapel or parish church, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon, and an evening program with live music, DJ set, or dancing. The local clubs take turns with the catering — the fire department, sports club, church choir, or rural women's association form the pillars of the festival. The proceeds benefit the clubs' activities.
Despite its manageable size, the Sander Kerwe attracts visitors from the entire Kusel district and the neighboring Saarpfalz district. Families meet, old friendships are maintained, and for many citizens, the Kerwe is a fixed date in their personal annual calendar. With its timing on the second Sunday in October, it also offers an occasion to dedicate the autumn weekend to convivial togetherness.
With October 11th, the Sander Kerwe 2026 falls on the second weekend of October. The autumnal atmosphere — colorful leaves, cooler temperatures, early darkness — gives the festival a unique mood. Families are expected from the entire district, from the neighboring districts of Schönenberg, Kübelberg, and Schmittweiler, as well as from the surrounding municipalities of the Kusel district and the Saarpfalz district.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the local council in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years for a typical Palatinate Kirchweih:
Festive church service for the Kirchweih. Afterwards, a morning pint (Frühschoppen) at the community center or in front of the church with breakfast beer and first snacks.
Lunch with Palatinate specialties and autumnal accents: Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach) with sauerkraut, potato soup, hearty stews, or other classic dishes. Palatinate wine, beer, and Schorle.
Coffee and cake hour with homemade cakes from the residents. Family activities. Meeting of generations, reunions with former residents.
Evening event with live music, DJ set, or cozy get-together until late into the night.
